A Prairie Tale is a fairy tale set on the plains and prairies of South Dakota.  Each story was written over one hundred years ago.  Modern illustrations give the stories new meaning.  All the Prairie Tales are classic children’s stories—perfect for modern young readers with an interest in the history of the Great Plains.

The Enchanted Buffalo, our latest book, came out in September 2010. You can read about this latest Prairie Tale, learn more about the books, and find out where you can meet the illustrators.

Between September 2010 and February 2011, the SDSHS Press ran a competition for 1st to 5th grade students in South Dakota to write a story or draw a picture inspired by one or more of the Prairie Tales. Click here to learn more about the winners and see their entries.

Another new addition to our site is the Prairie Tales Forum. Here, young readers, parents and teachers can post their views and ideas surrounding the series, so don't be shy and get posting! We are also offering fun new Prairie Tales bookmarks for download in PDF format. Finally, don't forget our fun and informative new videos that accompany each book, providing parents and teachers a chance to further explore the creatures and characters in the Prairie Tale series.

All the Prairie Tales are available direct from the South Dakota State Historical Society Press for $14.95 plus shipping and tax, or from your local bookstore.  If they do not have the book, you can ask them to order it for you.
